News from Miss Smith

This week we farewell Winter and welcome Spring. We’ve had a busy start to Term 3 with students getting many learning opportunities. A highlight for all of us has been the participation in many of the Book Week activities. We celebrated the wide range of books available to everybody. Thanks to everyone who assisted with the book week parade, the families who helped their students dress-up, the students and staff who coordinated the parade for our enjoyment.
Our School Association met last week and started to discuss negative student behaviours. Students in Year 8/9 and 10 also had a go at trying to categorise behaviours this week. Teaching staff have also completed this task. Our ancillary staff and other students will have a go at this challenge in the next couple of weeks. Building on our Yolla Supportive Learning Community Framework our goal is to have a clearer whole school understanding and response to student behaviours.
Later this term families will receive student work samples, to show their understandings and learnings as part of the new communicating with families strategy. All families will get work samples for English and Maths learning areas. We encourage everyone to make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher(s) on Tuesday 19 September to discuss your child’s progress and look at the work samples. If you are unable to meet with staff on one of the three days available your child’s work samples will be posted home.
New Staff
We welcome Miss Hazel Lucas and Mrs Katie O’Rourke to the Yolla District School team next week. Miss Lucas will be working in the Quality Teacher and Support Teacher space. Mrs O’Rourke will be working as a Teacher Assistant in the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 spaces.
The 2023 School Satisfaction Surveys are open!
Every year the Department for Education, Children and Young People conducts a School Satisfaction Survey to find out what your child(ren)'s school does well and where it may improve.
We would be grateful if you completed our online survey about Yolla District School. Your feedback is very important to help us inform our school-planning and decision-making.
The survey is open from Monday 28 August 2023 until Friday 22 September 2023 and should take about 5 minutes to complete.
Take the online survey by clicking this Link. or pasting it in your browser: https://ncv.microsoft.com/zoBqC4JQJ5
The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
All families in this school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any Department for Education, Children and Young People staff.
Please contact Yolla District School if you require any assistance or need access to a device.
Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey.

Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Those in Years 4–12 at Yolla District School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey are:
When: 4 – 8 September 2023
Who: 4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12 students
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been emailed home to all Year 4-12 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Miss Penelope Smith, Principal.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.

High school Girls Football Gala Day
On Thursday 3 August, we had 11 girls from Years 7-9 travel to Marist College to represent Yolla at NWJFU Girls’ Gala Day. Yolla played four games in total. Each game consisted of two fifteen-minute halves. Yolla won one game as well as having a couple of close games. It was fantastic to see girls who have not played football before picking up the skills quickly and trying their best for each game. The games were hard fought with the girls showing respect towards each other, umpires and opponents and courage to have a red-hot go.

Primary School Football
Earlier this term the Primary School Football roster concluded. The team showed improvement each week. The last game at Boat Harbour was the best of the season, it was fantastic to see the team link up with their ball movement and forward players got the opportunity to kick a few goals.
Later this term we will be holding our annual Yolla ‘Brownlow’ lunch for the players and parents to celebrate the season of football. Who will be crowned our newest ‘Brownlow’ medallist? Find out on the Thursday 21 September.

Prep
In Prep we have celebrated Book Week with dressing up. We did lots of work with books. Our favourite one was writing a response to Market Day by Carrie Gallasch. If we had $5 to spend at a market, what would we buy?
We also had fun exploring science in National Science Week. We made a volcano and walking water, it was lots of fun.
Learning in Prep

Year 1-2
Year 1-2 have been very busy learning about how we can change an item. So far we have been bending, folding, scrunching, stretching and pulling. We have discovered that a lot of the time we can change something but it does not change what it is made out of. For example, a bent pipe cleaner is still made out of wire. Our favourite experiment so far has been to test the elasticity (or stretchiness) of lolly snakes – we really liked taste testing at the end!

Outdoor Education – Archery
In Outdoor Education students got the opportunity to try archery on the oval. Students where taught the basic technique and then give the opportunity to practice shooting the arrows at a target. Here are some photos of the students in action.

Science Week
On Wednesday 23 August, three young scientists from the University of Tasmania, along with their group leader, visited Yolla District School.
Students from Years 1 to 7 attended three workshops led by the young scientists.
Nina Gunawan (Chemist) spoke on the chemistry of excrement. Students learned how poo is classified, how to analyse poo, and how this knowledge is helpful for scientists and doctors.
Yuhang Liu (Marine scientist) spoke on Antarctic oceanography and the impact of ocean waters on ice sheet melting in Antarctica.
Himanshu Saraswat (Geneticist) talked with students about the effects of genetics and exercise. Students learnt about types of reactions and how athletes may utilise science to enhance their reaction times.
We would also like to thank UTAS Group Leader Niam Askey-Doran (Geophysicist) for his assistance.
