News from Miss Smith
We’ve had a positive start to Term 3. Students are engaging in a range of learning activities throughout the whole school. Learning and wellbeing remain our priority, and where appropriate learning opportunities are being modified to suit students. I’d encourage all families to contact your child’s teachers if you’d like to know more about specific classroom activities.
Last week our teaching staff completed our fourth Reading learning module. These modules are being presented across Tasmania in public schools. The aim being to increase the reading skills of all students, by upskilling all staff and creating a common language about reading. Our next newsletter will outline the key components of the Big 6 for reading.
I’d like to remind everyone that at Yolla District School the expectations are that all students, staff and visitors will show respect for each other and take responsibility for their choices and actions. Students are not able to use their mobile phones between 9am and 3pm as per the Statewide policy. Verbal abuse of another person, student or adult will not be acceptable and students will be removed from learning spaces.
I look forward to seeing everyone for our Book Week celebrations – let’s celebrate together the Magic of Reading.

Launching into Learning – Tiny Taters Playgroup
We have had a great return to Launching into Learning. Our playgroup session starts in our Kinder space where children can enjoy various indoor and outdoor activities. We then move to the library to visit Susie, borrow books, listen to a story, and sing songs. Families with children aged 0-5 are most welcome to join us on Mondays at 9 am in the Kinder room.
Year 1-2
Year 1-2 are excited to be learning all about the Olympics. We have spent time learning about the history of the Olympics, some sports that are included, and some famous Australian athletes. This week we held our own Opening Ceremony for the Year 1-2 Potato Olympics. Watch this space for an update on how our potato athlete perform in various Olympic events!

Year 5-6 News
Last term, we combined our English with our Agriculture learnings and had a blast learning how to become Real Estate Agents! In English we learnt about the persuasive techniques real estate agents use, such as appealing to people’s emotions and logical thinking, how to structure a persuasive advertisement, and how our voices could be persuasive through emphasising particular words. In Ag, we designed our own farms making sure to make them compliant with the five animal freedoms, incorporate biodiversity and sustainability practices, and ensuring we had the right cattle for the right climate location. Our final combined task was to create a spoken advertisement to persuade people to buy our farm properties. We hope you like watching some of our advertisements and enjoy looking through the photos of our farm dioramas.

Hellyer College Taster Day
On Friday 26 July, Year 10 students went to Hellyer College for Taster Day. All students selected four subjects they wanted to participate in. These included Construction, Automotive, Music, Visual Art, Fitness, Jewellery Making, Food and Hospitality and many more. Everybody said it was a great day and it has helped them with their decision making for 2025.
Thoughts from the Year 10’s:
“Enjoyed it more than I thought I would”
“I didn’t think I would like to go to Hellyer but now I think I want to”
“Positive - from a social aspect it helped me try new things”
“Friendly teachers and nice people”
“You can get your English tick in some subjects like Drama so I can switch English for Maths”
“3D Design was fun but also stressful”
“The Art Department was incredible!”

Excursion to Atkinson's Aquaculture
On a very wet and windy day, 26 June, our class embarked on an exciting excursion to Atkinson's Aquaculture in Upper Natone. Despite the weather, the trip was a fantastic learning experience for all of us.
Atkinson's Aquaculture is a large fish farm that houses over 100,000 trout. These trout are farmed for both food production and for stocking waterways. The scale of the operation was truly impressive.
One of the highlights of the trip was getting the opportunity to milk the female trout of their eggs. This process involves carefully extracting the eggs and placing them into boxes where water washes through them. Any white eggs left behind are considered dead. Each female trout can spawn over 1,000 eggs, a fact that left many of us in awe.
We also learned to distinguish between male and female trout by their colouring—the females are lighter in colour than the males.
The owners of Atkinson's Aquaculture, Leigh and Mel, were extremely kind and welcoming, making the visit even more enjoyable. Their dog also became an instant hit with all of us.
Overall, the excursion was both interesting and educational. It provided us with a deeper understanding of aquaculture and the importance of sustainable fish farming practices.
