News from Miss Smith
Thanks to the students, families, community members and staff who have supported the zero tolerance processes in relation to disrespectful language towards other students and staff, the use of mobile phones between 9am and 3pm and refusal to participate in class. Our learning environment over the past three weeks has been more positive and focussed. We are very proud of the effort our students have made, we have an amazing school and the opportunities we can provide when we work together and focus on learning is greater.
Our expectations are that all students, staff and visitors will show respect for each other, take responsibility for their choices and actions. Learning and wellbeing will remain our priority, where appropriate learning opportunities will be modified to suit students. During Term 3 students will not be able to use their mobile phones between 9am and 3pm as per the Statewide policy. Verbal abuse of another person, student or adult will not be acceptable and students will be removed from learning spaces.
Finally, I’d like to wish everyone a safe and warm Winter break. We are looking forward to Term 3, during which we will celebrate the magic of reading and the success our athletes have at the Olympics.

Staffing News
Joining our teaching team in Term 3 is Mr Anthony Hall. Mr Hall is currently teaching at Burnie High School. He will be teaching Y11/12 Agricultural Studies, Year 7 and Year 8 STEM, an additional Y7/8 Materials and Technologies option and an additional Y7-10 Agricultural Studies class.
Mr Malcolm Boys will finish teaching in our Year 11/12 space at the end of Term 2. We’d like to thank Malcolm for joining our team to ensure that our Y11/12 Agriculture Program could continue.
Recently we welcomed Mr Glenn Crocker to our staff as our Farm Operator. Glenn is a local and we are sure that many of you may know him and will be keen to support him in his new role. Our previous farm operator Dave is relocating to the South of the State and we wish him and his partner every success with the move. Dave’s knowledge and professionalism has made him a true asset to our school community in the past twelve months.

Launching into Learning – Tiny Taters Playgroup
Our playgroup program will resume on Monday July 22 with Mrs Kathryn Marks. Sessions will start at 9am and will be followed by a session in the library at 10.10am. All families in the Yolla community with children aged zero to four years of age are welcome to attend. Kinder families who have a child four years or under may bring their Kinder child with them.
We are looking forward to learning through play with our families and ‘tiny taters’ throughout Term 3 and Term 4. Enrolment forms have been emailed to families who have participated previously or can be completed on Monday July 22.
Have you visited the Larapi Child and Family Learning Centre in Wynyard? We encourage all our families to access some of the amazing free programs being offered at the Centre. This centre has programs running every day for children aged between 0 and 4 years and families.
Learning Club
In Term 3 and 4 The Smith Family will be running a Learning Club at Yolla District School. Learning Club will be held after school on Tuesdays from 3pm-4pm in the STEM room for students in Years 3-6. If you are interested, enrolment forms can be collected from the school office or please contact the program coordinator, Eddy Costello on 0421 897 014 or email ed.costello@thesmithfamily.com.au.
Burnie Eisteddfod – Original Written Poems
Congratulations to Alfie who has been awarded equal first in the Year 2 Original Written Poems section of the Burnie Eisteddfod.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a personal challenge – not a competition. What’s your best reading tally? Can you beat it?
This year you can also earn points for your House, Waratah or Wattle.
If you figure out what you love to read, reading will be easier – so try reading different things – fiction, non-fiction – blogs, comics, poetry, lyrics, essays, magazines, newspapers… it all counts in the PRC.
This is a challenge for all Tasmanian students. It doesn’t matter what your reading level is, everyone can take part.
Reading is a skill we need for life. All the reading you do in this challenge will help you at school and at home.
Year 1-2
Reading, reading, reading! In Year 1/2, we are developing our love of reading in lots of ways. Children have been bringing books from home to share with the class during fruit time. We love snuggling up with a book for quiet time after lunch. We are enjoying recording the books we read for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. And of course, our weekly visits to the library with Susie are a highlight of our week! Our skills with phonics and decoding are growing each week and with it, our confidence and enjoyment of reading soars. A huge thank you to all our families who are practicing skills and reading with us at home!
Year 1-2 Reading
Year 5-6
Working with the HoL students
The Year 5-6’s had an amazing two weeks joining in with the high school Hands on Learning (HoL) group. Students made from scratch some delicious tomato relish scrolls, sewed together some pillow hearts, mosaicked some decorative coasters, and painted some incredible name plaques! There was even one student who made over 20 hot chocolates for us to drink – what a feat! 5/6 would like to thank the HoL students and teachers for having us for the two weeks.
Working with JCP Youth
Year 5-6 students participated in a JCP Leadership session on Tuesday and had stacks of fun. The following are some student ‘take aways’ from the session:
Josh took us through that if we see something wrong, we should not walk past it and told us the saying “The standard you walk past, is the standard you accept.”
We learnt that there are people in our lives that have a heavy influence on us without us really knowing about it.
We identified the traits of good leaders and acknowledged some great leaders in our class.
That we shouldn’t let people influence us in a bad way.
Teamwork makes the dream work!
Be a battery not a tap. A battery is someone who pumps us up whereas a tap is someone who drains our energy.
Don’t be mean to others, always try to be the best you can be.
You need to be a positive influence on others.
GOOD! When something bad happens, look for the GOOD in the situation.
Not to worry about failing at something, because you can always learn from it!
Year 5-6
Photography
In Term 1 and 2, photography was offered as an option for students in Year 7-10. All photos were taken with the schools iPads and printed in the Art room on the new colour printer. Here is some of the completed pieces.
Check out our photos!
Hands on Learning (HoL)
This term HoL Café have undertaken some different roles. The team worked together mentoring our Year 3-4 and 5-6 students. The primary years had a taster of what HoL has to offer. They got to cook, sew, mosaic and make name boards. The HoL Café team did an amazing job. They all demonstrated the school values of Respect, Courage and Responsibility when mentoring the younger students. Some of them admitted that “It must be hectic doing it every day like teachers do”.
It was an absolute pleasure to have had this opportunity. Many of the younger students hope to join HoL when they reach high school. This current group of HoL Cafe students have worked together for two terms and have all shown growth and confidence in themselves and their capacity to lead others and share their knowledge and skills. What a team!!!

NAIDOC Week
Our Kinder to Year 6 students celebrated NAIDOC week on Wednesday 3 July. Congratulations to all students and staff who created a magical day full of adventure, respect and celebration of culture. Enjoy the photos from our day that capture a snapshot of the magic.

Library News
Did you know that students in Years 7-12 can borrow a device or internet hotspot to take home for up to four weeks? Students can request to borrow a device or internet hotspot from the library to work on an assignment, research a topic of interest or complete an application online. If you do not want your child to be able to loan a device or internet hotspot, please contact the Yolla District School Office.

Share your thoughts on school attendance
Help us better understand any barriers that may be in the way, and what supports are needed to help with getting to school.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People is doing statewide consultation on school attendance. 3P Advisory is independently running the consultation. Your answers are confidential, and you won’t be identified.
We want to hear from you. You can take part in an online survey, share or vote for suggestions, or join an online drop-in session via the 3P website. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
You can also share your thoughts about what you like or don’t like about our Every school day matters campaign.
As a parent or carer, please have your say. Please encourage your child/ren, too.
Every piece of feedback counts. Thanks for helping shape future DECYP initiatives, school-based engagement strategies and public awareness campaigns.
