News from Miss Smith
It was good to see students, families and staff present at the Yolla and Wynyard ANZAC Day Services. Taking time to reflect on those people who have fought and continue to protect our rights as a democracy is important. Congratulations to Year 10 students Brayden, Isla and Morgan who spoke at the services, representing our school.
Last week our stock handling team represented Yolla District School at AGFEST. Congratulations to the whole team, those behind the scenes, those who lent us animals and those students competing. The team won the Schools Award for 2024. A report later in the newsletter also identifies some specific individual achievements. Whilst at AGFEST we had some initial conversations with Rural Youth about starting a club in Yolla. Keep an eye on our newsletters and social media for more information if you are aged between 15 and 30 years.
Be kind – is a message being delivered through Dolly’s Dream on Do it for Dolly Day 2024. Making Dolly’s dream of a kinder and safer world for Australian children, adolescents and communities will be the theme of conversations on Friday with everyone. Remember to Dress Blue. Our Student Leaders will also be giving everyone a free sausage on Friday at lunch time, please remember to bring your lunch as well.
On a final note – this Sunday please take a moment to thank those special people in your world for Mother’s Day. Saying thankyou to our Mum’s, Nan’s, Aunts, Carers, Neighbours and Special Adults who care and support us is appreciated and valued. This tradition started in 1908.

Launching into Learning – Tiny Taters Playgroup
We truly value the zero to four years of age program that our school has operated over the past decade. It is our intention to resume this program as soon as we have solved our staff shortages. We have a team of staff who are keen to get this program operational again.
At this stage, our LiL playgroup will not operate in Term 2. We encourage all our families to access some of the amazing free programs being offered at the Larapi Child and Family Learning Centre in Wynyard. This centre has programs running every day.
Library News
Did you know that students in Years 7-12 can borrow a device or internet hotspot to take home for up to four weeks? Students can request to borrow a device or internet hotspot from the library to work on an assignment, research a topic of interest or complete an application online. If you do not want your child to be able to loan a device or internet hotspot please contact the Yolla District School Office.
Apprenticeship and Traineeships for School-aged Learners
Parent/Guardian Video Link (3.30min)
- Apprenticeships and traineeships can be undertaken full-time, part-time or as a school-based apprenticeship/traineeship.
- A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship offers flexibility. It enables a student in Year 10, 11 and 12 to combine school, work and training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. (A student in Year 9 can undertake an apprenticeship/traineeship (dealt with on a case-by-case approach) only under certain conditions.)
- Students are expected to attend school and work toward their Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE).
- Contact Miss Smith if you’d like to discuss further.
Make each day count
Welcome back to Term 2, we hope you enjoyed your break!
By showing up to school every day, your child will have the best opportunity at a bright future. It gives them every chance to be around friends, learn new things, and find interests.
We have lots in store for this term, including cross country, Do it for Dolly Day, JCP Youth Workshops and various excursions.
Good attendance habits can sometimes be hard to stick. Keep trying to create a solid routine, to set your child up for success for the rest of the year.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Please always talk to us if you’re having trouble getting your child to school. We’re here to help.
Share your thoughts on school attendance
Help us better understand any barriers that may be in the way, and what supports are needed to help with getting to school.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People is doing statewide consultation on school attendance. 3P Advisory is independently running the consultation. Your answers are confidential, and you won’t be identified.
We want to hear from you. You can take part in an online survey, share or vote for suggestions, or join an online drop-in session via the 3P website. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
You can also share your thoughts about what you like or don’t like about our Every school day matters campaign.
As a parent or carer, please have your say. Please encourage your child/ren, too.
Every piece of feedback counts. Thanks for helping shape future DECYP initiatives, school-based engagement strategies and public awareness campaigns.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a personal challenge – not a competition. What’s your best reading tally? Can you beat it?
If you figure out what you love to read, reading will be easier – so try reading different things – fiction, non-fiction – blogs, comics, poetry, lyrics, essays, magazines, newspapers… it all counts in the PRC.
This is a challenge for all Tasmanian students. It doesn’t matter what your reading level is, everyone can take part.
Reading is a skill we need for life. All the reading you do in this challenge will help you at school and at home.
Safeguarding Training
Did you know that as a DECYP employee, volunteer, or external service provider for the department, you must complete Safeguarding Training?
The compulsory training is designed to help us better safeguard kids in Tasmania.
2023 School Magazine Orders
The school magazine is now available from the school office. The magazine costs $22.00.
