News from Miss Smith
Congratulations everyone, we’ve had a busy start to 2024. It has been exciting to see students’ skills growing and the excitement on their faces when they conquer a new skill. Thank you to all families who were able to join us for the assembly on Monday, which shared a snapshot of students’ achievements and successes in Term 1.
Please enjoy the newsletter today that shares some Term 1 highlights and gives information about upcoming activities. One activity that I’m really looking forward to is our JCP Empowering Youth Workshop for our Year 5/6. Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 groups. Each group will work with this team for 2.5-3 hours over the 25 and 26 June. The workshop will focus on resilience, leadership and empowering students to be the best version of themselves.
I look forward to seeing students and families at the ANZAC Day services in Yolla and Wynyard. Lest we Forget.
Behaviour concern – The number of secondary students using their phone during school hours continues to grow at Yolla. Families are asked to help us by encouraging your child to turn their phone off and put it away during the school day.

Launching into Learning – Tiny Taters Playgroup
We truly value the zero to four years of age program that our school has operated over the past decade. It is our intention to resume this program as soon as we have solved our staff shortages. We have a team of staff who are keen to get this program operational again.
At this stage, our LiL playgroup will not operate in Term 2. We encourage all our families to access some of the amazing free programs being offered at the Larapi Child and Family Learning Centre in Wynyard. This centre has programs running every day.
Parents and Friends Committee
Canteen
Our school canteen will be operating on Friday 12 April 2024 at recess and lunch. If you are willing to volunteer in our canteen to enable us to open more often, please let the school know on 6438 0222. A registration to work with vulnerable people (RWVP) card is required for all our volunteers and Safeguarding Training must also be completed. Please enquire about these at the school office.
Mother’s Day Stall
Our Mother’s Day Stall will also include a Muffin Sale on Friday 10 May. If you can provide any donations for the Mother’s Day Stall, it would be really appreciated. Any items can be left at the school office, thank you.
Year 1-2
We have been very busy in Maths so far this year. We have been learning about numbers up to and beyond 100. We have been practising counting forwards and backwards and ordering numbers. We know that numbers can be made of parts and have been separating numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. We are finishing off this term looking at collecting data and representing that using tally marks, picture graphs and bar graphs.
Maths in Year 1-2
Year 5-6
What an amazing Term 1 we’ve had in 5/6! The students have worked so tremendously hard putting effort into and completing all their work. They have created some engaging short narrative stories, researched some adaptations to add to a mainland animal to relocate it to Antarctica, and are currently learning how to research in HASS to create a social studies information report next term.
I am super proud of all the students’ efforts this term and am looking forward to seeing what remarkable feats they can achieve in Term 2.
Term 1 in Year 5-6
Primary STEM
STEM stands for Science; Technology; Engineering and Mathematics.
We have learnt about the Design Process and followed the steps to design, make and test our creations.
This term has been focussed on simple robotics.
We made a simple electrical circuit, and our challenge was to use the circuit to make a ‘Scribble Bot’ move.
These photos show us working on our ‘Bots’ and testing them to see if they would successfully scribble.

Student Leader Report
This term the Student Leaders have been busy researching and organising events for the term and the year. This term we organised activities for Harmony Day which included friendship bracelet making and rock painting. We also organised an Easter Hat Parade for the Primary Years. We were very impressed with the creativity of the students and their participation in these activities.
We are already looking forward to next term. We will be organising Do it for Dolly Day activities, be part of the Yolla Co-op Open Day, we will also be traveling to Launceston early next term to participate in the Youth Forum about Housing.
We have lots more ideas to come and we are looking forward to sharing more with you next term. We would love to hear from all students in the school so we are hoping to create a suggestion box so we can hear your ideas and suggestions for the school.
We hope you have a safe holiday,
Student Leaders
Easter Hat Parade
Harmony Week Activities
We celebrated Harmony week with doing activities such as, bracelet making and rock painting. It was lovely to see students engaging, connecting and sharing ideas with each other. The students had lots of fun being able to spend extra time with their friends and giving each other friendship bracelets and beautiful painted rocks.

Burnie Youth Expo Report
On Tuesday 9 April the Year 9 class went to The Point at West Park Oval to participate in the Youth Expo. We listened to three people speak about their jobs. One worked at Vinnies, one at the Indie School and the other for the Youth Foundation. Then we went around the stalls and talked to people about their businesses and programs. The businesses and programs included trucking, construction, Family Planning, companies that assist with apprenticeships, Head Space, Laurel House, Libraries Tasmania and many more. We all had a good time and learnt something new.

Year 11-12 Animal Care
Scott Smith from North West Snake Catchers, recently visited our Year 11/12 Animal Care class bringing with him some live local specimens.
Scott talked about his experiences as a snake catcher, general information on snakes and some common myths. This fitted in really well with some theory work we completed on animal classification and the difference between ectothermic vs endothermic animals.
Scott talked about Tasmanian snakes and how deadly their venom is, along with information on what you should do if you are bitten by a snake. After his presentation he showed us a tiger snake named Pearl and a copperhead and explained how you tell the difference. We were then able to handle a blue tongued lizard. All in all, it was fun and informative.
Thank you Scott, from the Year 11-12 class.
ANZAC Day
On Thursday 25 April Yolla District School will be participating in the ANZAC Day services at Wynyard and Yolla. All families are invited to attend, if your child choses to march in the service they must be in full school uniform.
If attending the Yolla Dawn Service, please meet Mrs Tippett at the Yolla Football Club at 5:30am to walk to The Yolla Grove of Remembrance. The Dawn Service will begin at 6:00am with a breakfast to follow at the Yolla Football Club.
If attending the Wynyard Midday Service, please meet Miss Smith at the RSL in Goldie Street at 10:20am. Students will walk to the Wynyard Cenotaph for the midday service at 11:00am.
Please note that you are responsible for your child during the service. If you have any questions, please call Brittany Tippett on 6438 0222.
Do it for Dolly Day ‘24
Next term, Student Leaders will be hosting a Do it for Dolly Day. Dolly’s Dream was created by Kate and Tick Everett following the shattering loss of their 14-year-old daughter, Dolly, after ongoing bullying. Kate and Tick’s aim is to prevent other families having to walk this road and experiencing this devastation. Dolly’s Dream is committed to changing the culture of bullying by increasing understanding of the impact of bullying, anxiety, depression and youth suicide – and by providing support to parents. More information will be provided at the beginning of Term 2.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a personal challenge – not a competition. What’s your best reading tally? Can you beat it?
If you figure out what you love to read, reading will be easier – so try reading different things – fiction, non-fiction – blogs, comics, poetry, lyrics, essays, magazines, newspapers… it all counts in the PRC.
This is a challenge for all Tasmanian students. It doesn’t matter what your reading level is, everyone can take part.
Reading is a skill we need for life. All the reading you do in this challenge will help you at school and at home.
From our School Health Nurse
What is Hygiene?
It is cleaning our body, so we don’t get sick and so we are clean and smell nice.
Wash our hands for 20 seconds:
You should:
Don’t forget your School Health Nurse is here to help and can supply hygiene products.
Safeguarding Training
Did you know that as a DECYP employee, volunteer, or external service provider for the department, you must complete Safeguarding Training?
The compulsory training is designed to help us better safeguard kids in Tasmania.
student2student Reader – Parent/Carer Information Sheet
The Smith Family’s student2student program matches an older student (the Buddy) with your child (the Reader) to help improve their reading and confidence.
Your child will be reading for 18 weeks with their Buddy, 2-3 times per week for a minimum of 20 minutes each time.
Every school day matters
Welcome back for another school year – we’re excited for what’s ahead! Start the year right by making every school day count.
There are lots of things you can do to set your child up for success:
Make sure your child goes to school, every day
Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grow, and connect with their mates and teachers. It’s where bright futures start and where they’ll benefit the most.
Get them excited for school
If you show a positive attitude and excitement towards school, your child will pick up on that.
The most common thing we hear from students, of all ages, is that school is where they can:
» spend time with their friends and teachers
» create new and fun experiences
» find their interests
» learn new things
» open up their options – for whatever future they want (whether that’s their dream job or to travel around the world).
Share these positives with your child.
Talk to your child about school
Open up a conversation with your child about what’s happening at school. It will help you to better support their interests and confidence in learning. If you show an interest in school, they’ll know that getting an education is important and valued.
Celebrate the milestones
Big and small! Celebrate milestones such as making it through the first day or week of school. And remember: all milestones look different. If it’s a big achievement for your child, it’s important to recognise it.
Set up a time to talk to your child’s teacher or principal
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can. Know when to seek help There is no weakness in admitting you need help. If your child has completely disengaged with school, and not attending at all, there is support to help you. In the first instance, talk to us at school.
